UK nationwide fabric and haberdashery stores

Sadly, there aren't many nationwide fabric stores left but if you are lucky enough to live near a John Lewis, Hobbycraft or Boyes store then they will supply  most of your mainstream needs (and the occasional       treat). Whilst the quality of the fabrics does vary between stores, sometimes they do overlap. John Lewis mostly supplies high quality on-trend cotton fabrics and even silks, whilst Boyes and Hobbycraft tend to offer middle to lower range cotton fabrics. Note: Boyes in Ilkley can be quite furrtabulous if want to make teddy bears.

Sewing in the movies

For inspiration, I often play movies in the background whilst I'm working. The list of films below might also inspire you:

  • Gilmore Girls
  • Anne of Green Gables
  • The Dressmaker
  • The Tailor of Panama
  • Coco before Chanel
  • Bright Star
  • The Time in Between
  • Strictly Ballroom

The Art of Draping

Draping indulges my senses: the feel of the fabric, watching how fabric falls in stillness and flows with movement. Draping is the art of manipulating fabric to create a three dimensional form. Together with flat pattern making, draping is one of the two main traditional approaches used in fashion design. In order to understand this art form better I studied "Draping Womenswear" at UAL: Central St Martins (Granary Square, London, UK). In my own artistic practice draping is sculpture, its the same vibrant feeling runs through my fingertip I work with clay. Fabric has so many possibilities.

Brighton (UK) fabrics

Brighton is my favourite town in the UK for fabric shopping. There are so many little boutique stores full of delightful modern fabrics with modest price tags. So take a spare bag when you go to Brighton beach for all the fabric bargins you'll find. My top three favourite stores to visit are: Ditto's, Brighton Sewing Centre and Fabric Land.
